Why it can be liberating and not a pretense.
Along with the folks who won’t apologize, there are some who see change as bad. Akin to a betrayal. If you’ve changed your mind, you must’ve been wrong before or — worse! — a flip-flopper. They view change as weakness. Not sure of their views on the theory of evolution, but I’m fairly confident many would not get a passing grade if quizzed.
